SAP XI Introduction

SAP XI stands for Exchange Infrastructure module of SAP, it is an enterprise-level integration application produced by the German global software corporation SAP AG which is used to mediate the exchange of information between various underlying platforms and systems. It is a core NetWeaver software component based on open standards and architecture that allows cross-platform communication and collaboration. Primarily it is used for the integration of internal and external software systems and back-environments. Also, it ensures mode-led message parsing between different platforms. Its purpose is to facilitate and provide SAP integration with compatible systems and applications. It utilizes open-standard XML messaging to ensure HTTP interoperability and communication.

The integration server, which works as a technical and vendor application mediator, manages the core application communication process of SAP XI, which is an XML message scheme that provides an open platform. It manages proxy or interface communication.

SAP XI is based on general standards to permit external systems to be integrated. At the centre of the infrastructure is an XML-based communication that uses HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol). The application-specific contents are transferred in messages in user-defined XML (Extensible Markup Language) schema from the sender to the receiver using the Integration Server.

Senders and receivers that exchange messages using the Integration Server are separated from one another which makes it easier to connect systems that are technologically different. Every system that can exchange messages with the Integration Server can also exchange messages with all other systems that are connected to the Integration Server. This also supports the following methods of communication with the Integration Server:

1.   Direct communication using proxies,
2.   Communication using adapters. Here users create interfaces for message exchange in the application system or use existing interfaces.

Simple message processing on the Integration Server is stateless which means that the Integration Server does not know of any connections between various messages. On the other hand, cross-component integration processes, describe related processes, which can use the knowledge about messages that have already been processed to further control the process. To model, change, and manage these cross-component integration processes users can use SAP XI which is executed on the Integration Server and included in message processing by configuration.

With these cross-component integration processes, the entire integration knowledge of a collaborative process is saved centrally in SAP XI: Objects at design time in the Integration Repository and objects at configuration time in the Integration Directory. In this way, SAP Exchange Infrastructure follows the principle of shared collaboration knowledge, there is no need to search for information about a collaborative process in each of the systems involved, instead, it can call this information centrally which helps to reduce the costs for the development and maintenance of the shared applications.
